Fifth & Pacific Cos.(FNP) unveiled a plan to change its name to Kate Spade & Co., the second time the clothing maker has changed its moniker since 2012, with the latest move tied to its narrow focus on the designer brand. Shares dropped 8.2% to $29.25 premarket as the company also issued a fiscal-year sales outlook that missed Wall Street expectations.
- [By Andrew Marder]
It looks like Juicy Couture and Lucky Brand have become too burdensome for Fifth and Pacific (NYSE: FNP ) to handle. The company is reportedly looking to sell off the brands, leaving its portfolio centered around the fast-rising Kate Spade brand. Lucky has had some success in the past year, though Juicy has languished, stuck with the velour tracksuits of yesterday. While Fifth and Pacific hasn't confirmed the rumors, the sale would make a lot of sense, and likely leave the company better off.

Shares of Lululemon have gained 3% to $45.05 at 2:15 p.m. today. And those pretenders, er, competitors, Gap (GPS) and Under Armour (UA). They’ve dropped 0.1% to $44.27 and 1.3% to $69.01, respectively.
- [By Andrew Marder]
Under Armour (NYSE: UA ) and Gap (NYSE: GPS ) both had a chance to make something of Lululemon's bad news, but neither acted quickly enough. As a result, Lululemon is likely to see less damage to its top and bottom lines in next week's earnings announcement. The company initially announced an impact on comparable sales of between 3% and 6%. I would be surprised if the damage was that bad, and the original comparable sales increase of 11% no longer seems out of reach.

Since being added to the Dow Jones Industrials index last September, shares of Nike Inc. (NYSE: NKE) are up just over 11%. In the same period, Under Armour Inc. (NYSE: UA) is up 57%. That is not an entirely fair comparison: Nike’s market value is about $126 billion, compared with Under Armour’s $13 billion, and size often makes a difference when it comes to growth. Adding 57% to $126 billion is a lot harder than adding the same amount to around $7.5 billion.

But success comes with a target ,and other athletic companies are gunning for Nike's growth. Under Armour (NYSE: UA ) , Oakley, Puma, Adidas, and other brands are trying to play where Nike dominates. Here's how Nike has gotten ahead of the competition, as well as a look at how it can stay ahead.
