Best Integrated Utility Stocks To Invest In Right Now

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- To say that Russia has so far upstaged the United States in the midst of the so-called "Syrian Crisis" would not be an overstatement.

After Secretary of State John Kerry let slip some "rhetorical" and "hypothetical" comments on how Syria could avoid a U.S. offensive attack by giving up its chemical weapons, something remarkable occurred.

At a news conference afterward in London Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov gave Kerry's idea the Old Russian bear hug. By golly within a few days Syria endorsed it and everyone who is against attacking Syria breathed a sigh of profound relief...at least for the time being.

Kerry and Lavrov will convene a conference in Geneva Thursday with hopes for progress and a chance to raise their glasses in a toast for peace. No matter what the discussion will be lively. The United States will be looking for a Russian proposal that should disclose more details about what Syrian President Bashar al-Assad may be willing to do about turning over his chemical weapons to an authority like the United Nations. All this drama serves to remind us that Russia is becoming a big player once again on the world stage. That may be the reason famed investors like Jim Rogers have begun looking at investments in Russia this year. You may recall that Rogers co-founded the legendary Quantum Fund with George Soros. It helped both men become extremely wealthy. The potential for Russian resourcefulness brought to mind an article that Dr. Steve Sjuggerud shared with his readers of his Daily Wealth in June. Sjuggerud pointed out that in Rogers' neighborhood Russian President Vladimir Putin isn't thought of with affection. Yet that hasn't quenched Rogers' interest in examining investments in Russia. "Maybe [Putin] doesn't like being treated as a KGB thug," Rogers says. "He understands there has not been great prosperity in Russia in the past few years... I have the view that international capital is welcome in Russia. And if you go there and you invest, you will find opportunities."

LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  ) , along with affiliate LinnCo (NASDAQ: LNCO  ) , are out with first-quarter earnings. The report was below the company's guidance expectations, as production came in at 796 Million cubic feet equivalent per day, or MMcfe/d, against a guidance range of 810 MMcf/d to 845 MMcf/day for the quarter. Let's drill down a little deeper and see what happened.

For the full year, Memorial expects DCF of $129 to $133 million, which would provide distribution coverage of 110 to 120 percent. Because I believe natural gas prices will steadily creep higher over the next three to five years, MEMP could make an excellent portfolio addition with some upside appreciation potential. The one caveat is that it trades at a premium to competitors like BreitBurn and Linn Energy (Nasdaq: LINE). This is understandable in the case of Linn, which is dealing with an SEC issue, but I would take a good look at BreitBurn as a lower-cost alternative.

It no coincidence I have another energy play here, because energy is plentiful and always consumed. Linn Energy (LINE) is an indie oil and gas player, and spread over the many states across the country. Proven reserves are 4,796 billion cubic feet of oil and natural gas, and it operates a whopping 15,804 wells. It also is unique in that it hedges 100% of its production vs. some 71% among other MLPs. The stock pays a solid 11.2% dividend and may merge with Berry Petroleum (BRY) to solidify its balance sheet.

I'm quite frankly baffled by the amount of negative press LINN Energy (NASDAQ: LINE  ) has generated this year. The one-two punch of negative research reports followed up by equally negative articles published by Barron's have been a recurring theme all year. I'm sure it is causing many investors to lose both patience and faith in the company. It's a shame, because it's causing undue harm to investors, many of whom have been holding for a long time.

What’s this week’s big story for investors?

Candidate #1: RadioShack (NYSE: RSH) said it will close up to 1,100 of its nearly 5,200 US stores amid widening losses. The company also announced that revenue in the fourth quarter of 2013 fell 20 percent from year-earlier levels.

It doesn’t matter whether the latest announcement is in addition to or merely an expansion of the company’s Feb. 5 statement that it would close 500 stores. That, in turn, shortly followed the beleaguered company’s $4 million expenditure for a widely praised but clearly ill-timed 30-second ad during the Super Bowl.

Also this week, Radio Shack agreed to pay its top executives “retention” bonuses, saying their skills are critical to the company comeback plan. CEO Joe Magnacca will get a $500,000 payment, while other executives will receive $187,500 to $275,000.

The stock currently trades around $2, down from its 1999 peak of $61.

No, that’s not the week’s big story. But it was too good to ignore.

Candidate #2: The current bull market celebrates its fifth birthday this week, with the Standard & Poor’s 500 delivering a total return of about 175 percent during that time.

Since 1921, the median bull market has been 50 months long and has delivered 115 percent in price appreciation. So this market is older and better than most. Still, the conditions aren’t yet present to suggest the end is near. Indeed, Wednesday’s advance, the best of the year to date, was exceptional for both its breadth and heavy volume.

The five-year anniversary also means that stocks, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, closed-end funds and so on will boast very good five-year returns. Don’t be overly impressed. Reason: Almost everybody will be a winner. (Other than Radio Shack.) But you should dig deeper: Comparisons will be useful to sort out leaders and laggards for potential investme

Toby Talbot/AP NEW YORK -- A voluntary effort by the world's largest food and beverage companies to remove billions of calories from the products they sell in the United States to help combat the nation's obesity epidemic has far exceeded its five-year goal, according to an independent evaluation released Thursday. In May 2010, 16 of the nation's biggest food and beverage companies, from Coca-Cola (KO) to Kraft Foods Group (KRFT), pledged to remove 1 trillion calories from the U.S. marketplace by 2012 and 1.5 trillion by 2015, compared with a 2007 baseline. In fact, as of 2012 they sold 6.4 trillion fewer calories, found an analysis by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "Reports like this, and the fact that they exceeded their commitment by fourfold, really shows that you can make progress in giving American families more healthy options," said Larry Soler, president of the Partnership for a Healthier America, a non-profit chaired by first lady Michelle Obama. The group was formed in 2010 to work with the private sector on anti-obesity strategies. At the time, critics said the Partnership relied too heavily on the good will of the industry and couldn't replace the role of tighter regulation on how food is manufactured and marketed. Such voluntary efforts by industry "are not a magic bullet," said Jeff Levi, executive director of Trust for America's Health, a non-profit policy group. "Particularly with kids, there is a role for regulation" in reducing demand for unhealthy, high-calorie fare. It isn't clear yet how the companies accomplished the dramatic calorie reduction, said UNC public health researcher Barry Popkin, who led the analysis funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation's largest public health philanthropy. Some of the decline may have come from the recession, as financially strapped families cut back on junk food. When the pledge was announced, companies said they would substitute lower-calorie pro
