Shares of TCF Financial Corporation (NYSE: TCB) have recorded a year-to-date return of 26.6%. Impressive organic growth, balance sheet repositioning and strong capital deployment activities of the company were primary factors behind the growth. However, we are not so optimistic about these positives translating into further price appreciation down the road as there will likely be significant pressure on its top line.
After analyzing the company's fundamentals following third-quarter 2013 earnings results, our suggestion is to stay invested in the stock but not to add further shares of the company to your portfolio.
Why Neutral?
TCF Financial reported third-quarter 2013 net income of 23 cents per share, in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. However, results improved by 17 cents on a year-over-year basis. Deposits and loans growth, along with an improving credit quality were the tailwinds for the quarter. Moreover, strong capital position was a positive.
We view TCF Financial as a sound asset for yield-seeking investors. The company has been able to generate positive cash flow even amid an increasingly difficult operating environment. Moreover, over the last about four years ended Sep 30, 2013, the company enhanced shareholder value by returning over $130 million through dividends, thereby enhancing investors' confidence.

They offer 40 stocks that meet the criteria, with the caveat that investors should “use this screen as a starting point for identifying stocks likely to reverse 2013 underperformance in 1Q 2014,” not as a blanket recommendation. Potential winners include such big names as Ford (F), Wal-Mart (WMT), Target (TGT), Abbott Laboratories (ABT) and Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX).

The intuition is something like this: Youe investing in quality companies with strong balance sheets which are capable of weathering rough markets. But theye not stodgy old dividend-centric companies so much as growing firms which choose dividends as a means of rewarding shareholders, such as Abbott Laboratories (ABT) or Lowe’s (LOW).

That's all Chevron's stock has done today, however, falling along with the broader energy sector. Strangely, Chevron's stock is on the downswing despite a release of good news. The Supreme Court of Argentina unfroze Chevron's assets in the South American nation, lifting an earlier embargo that had gone on for months. Chevron is looking to team up with Argentinian state-run energy firm YPF (NYSE: YPF ) in developing the Vaca Muerta shale field, the world's second-largest shale-oil basin.

Not that I feel sorry for Argentina, of course. The country got itself into this mess by borrowing too much money and then arrogantly refusing to pay it back. Argentina has also pursued a range of disastrous anti-market policies over the past decade, has made a habit of expropriating foreign assets (as was the case when it effectively stole Repsol YPF (YPF) stake), and has even contributed to the soaring world price of beef by restricting exports in a boneheaded attempt to contain inflation.

Last year, the Argentinean government nationalized 51% of YPF (YPF) from Madrid based Repsol (REPYY), which still holds a 12.4% stake in Argentina's biggest oil and gas company. When the nationalization happened, Argentina's government argued that the Spanish group had not been investing enough in the country. Hence, the lack of investments had left Argentina without its very much appreciated external surplus in oil and gas. Even when its true that YPF's Capex investments were kept at a minimum level from 2003 to 2011, its also true that low Capex was a direct result of Argentina's (very) poor and unsustainable energy policies.

Finally, Westfield's biggest closed positions included Ralcorp and Vertex Pharmaceuticals. Other closed positions of interest include Dynavax (NASDAQ: DVAX ) and JDS Uniphase (NASDAQ: JDSU ) . Dynavax shares fell sharply upon an FDA rejection of its hepatitis B vaccine Heplisav. The FDA left open the possibility of a more limited approval, but Dynavax now has more work to do, and it's burning cash while its revenue has been shrinking. Fortunately, it does seem to have have ample cashto keep it afloat for a few years. Investors are right to worry about share dilution, too.
