Hot Computer Hardware Companies To Watch In Right Now

AVEO Pharmaceuticals' (NASDAQ: AVEO  ) announced yesterday that the Food and Drug Administration rejected its kidney cancer drug tivozanib.

No surprise there. The briefing documents for the advisory panel meeting expressed the FDA reviewers' negative opinion, and tivozanib's fate was sealed when the committee voted 13-1, recommending against approving the drug.

What is a little surprising is that shares of AVEO jumped 8% on the news and are up another 6% today.

But only a little.

Call it a "cover the short on the news." Not as catchy as "sell the news," but it works in the other direction as well. After the advisory committee meeting, AVEO stock continued to fall, and the bump over the last two days puts it about where it traded after the meeting.

I certainly didn't see anything in the rejection announcement nor today's conference call �that would make AVEO worth more after the rejection. To get tivozanib approved for kidney cancer, the FDA wants a new clinical trial since the overall survival data was confounded -- to say the least -- by patients crossing over from the control group to take tivozanib as well.

    From a technical perspective, ELX bounced modestly higher here right above some near-term support at $7.95 with decent upside volume. This stock has been trending sideways inside of a consolidation chart pattern over the last month, with shares moving between 7.50 on the downside and $8.46 on the upside. This modest spike is now starting to push shares of ELX within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern. That trade will hit if ELX manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $8.34 to $8.46 with high volume.

    Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ELX as long as it's trending above some key near-term support levels at $7.95 or $7.50 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 786,981 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then ELX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $8.99. Any high-volume move above $8.99 will then give ELX a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $10 to $11.19.

(OTCMKTS:MDDD) is one of the great ones within the 3D printing world. No, it's neither as big nor as prolific as 3D printer names like 3D Systems Corporation (NYSE:DDD) or Stratasys, Ltd.     Well, as it turns out, the snake that bit L&L Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ:LLEN) and Sovereign Lithium Inc. (OTCMKTS:SLCO) didn't end up biting Makism 3D Corp. (OTCMKTS:MDDD). And in retrospect, that's probably how it should be. Indeed, the fact that MDDD didn't even come close to suffering the same fate as SLCO or LLEN did may be the biggest assurance Makism 3D fans could hope for that the company is everything it says it is.

    In retrospect, their pullbacks come as no real surprise. Neither Voxeljet AG (NYSE:VJET) nor Camtek LTD. (NASDAQ:CAMT) saw their shares soar on any news that was meaningfully sustainable, and after the "shoot first, ask questions later" market had a chance to start asking questions, it became clear that - even with the largest of glimmers of corporate progress unveiled a few weeks ago - CAMT and VJET both had been bid up more on hype and less on substance. Meanwhile (and this could be bitterly ironic to some), a small cap play in the same 3D printing space that (1) didn't beat the daylights out of its hype-drum, and (2) is actually much closer to bringing a revenue-bearing product to the market [per today's news - more on that below] isn't getting anywhere near the same attention. That company? Makism 3D Corp. (OTCBB:MDDD). The good news is, MDDD finally looks like it's revving its engine, while Camtek and Voxeljet AG shares continue to deteriorate.

CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V. Herbalife: Solid Earnings, Big Monkey On Its Back

If Herbalife (HLF) traded only on fundamentals, there’s no telling how high it could go. It doesn’t, however, so investors need to weigh the pros and cons of investing in its shares, despite last night’s financial results.

January Auto Sales Slump on Cold Weather

Automakers reported January U.S. sales throughout the morning Monday, and it looks like carmakers posted mostly weaker results. Cold weather in the eastern half of the United States weighed on sales in what is already historically the weakest month for car sales.

Based on analysts’ estimates, January’s seasonally adjusted annual sales rate for 2014 stands at 15.6 million units. Sales in 2013 totaled 15.6 million units, up 8% over 2012 sales.

Chrysler’s year-over-year sales rose 8% to 127,183 units, the company’s best January sales level since 2008. The company’s Chrysler, Jeep, Ram Truck and Fiat brands all posted gains in the January. Month-over-month, however, sales fell by almost 34,000 units, or 21%. Chrysler projected a seasonally adjusted annual rate of sales from all manufacturers at 15.6 million units for 2014, down from last month’s projection of 15.8 million. The company ended the month with 79 days supply of inventory, flat with December’s total.

Ford Motor Co.’s (NYSE: F) U.S. sales fell 7% year-over-year in January, to 154,644 Ford and Lincoln vehicles, compared with January 2013 sales of 166,501. Sales were down for all types of vehicles, with car sales off 13.4%, utility vehicle sales off 5.8% and truck sales down 2.2%. Only the Ford Mustang and the Lincoln MKZ and MKX models posted year-over-year sales gains. The company blamed poor weather in Ford’s largest sales regions

Sales for General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) fell 11.9% year-over-year in January to 171,486 vehicles. GM pointed out that January is the industry’s lowest sales month of the year and said “extreme” winter weather pushed sales down even more this year. Based on January sales, GM estimates that the full-year seasonally adjusted annual rate of U.S. sales for all carmakers will total 15.3 million light vehicles sold, down from a December rate of 15.6 million. GM estimates total U.S. sales from all carmakers in 2014 to total 16.0 million to 16.5 million units, the best year since 2007.

Sales at Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM) for the month totaled 146,365 units, down 7.2% compared with January 2013. A company executive said, “January was off to a solid start, but the weather condition slowed industry sales in key markets late in the month.” Toyota also announced late last week that it would stop selling certain models due to a problem with seat heaters.

Volkswagen sold just 23,494 units in the United States in January. That was a drop of 19% year-over-year, on top of a 22.7% drop in December sales. In 2013, VW sold 407,704 vehicles, compared with 438,133 in 2012, a decline of 6.9%.

Honda Motor Co. Ltd. (NYSE: HMC) reported fiscal third-quarter results last Friday. In the quarter the company sold 900,000 units, a year-over-year increase of 7%. Auto sales revenue rose 23.9%. The company said it expects to sell 1.6 million cars in the United States in 2014. January sales data will not be released until after markets close Monday.

1 Dividend Payer Rewarding Shareholders While Refocusing Its Business

Simon Property Group (NYSE: SPG  ) recently announced plans to spin off its strip malls and smaller enclosed malls into a new company. That will allow the mall giant to focus on its higher-end enclosed malls and outlets. The move will be a good one for shareholders on multiple fronts, but such transactions don't always play out this well.

Getting "simple"
Simon is a prime example of an industry leader that took advantage of an economic soft patch to grow. During the 2007 to 2009 recession, the real estate investment trust (REIT) was actively adding to its portfolio, buying competitors like Mills Corporation (2007) and Prime Outlets (2009).

This growth, however, came at a cost. Simon cut its dividend at the tail end of the recession, right when income investors needed it most. Although the dividend is now above its pre-recession level, that investor-unfriendly move left a bad taste in the mouths of people trying to live off of their dividends.

That makes the spin-off of the company's "less desirable" properties that much nicer, since it will be accompanied by an effective dividend increase. Simon's dividend will stay the same, and the spin-off will pay a dividend of its own. A welcome reward if you stuck with the REIT through the tough years.

Losing its way
Of course, industry leaders don't always make the right calls. For example, while Simon was cutting its dividend to foster growth, General Electric (NYSE: GE  ) was cutting its dividend to ensure its solvency. GE's leadership let the company's financial arm become disproportionally large compared to its industrial business. When the financial crisis hit, it had little choice but to take a government handout and disappoint investors who had relied on the one-time dividend champion for income.

Today, the company is back on its feet, increasing its dividend again, and planning to spin off its credit card business to reduce the contribution of its finance arm to just 30% of earnings. Earnings, however, are expected to be lower in 2014, and perhaps in 2015, without the contribution from what is estimated to be a $16 billion unit. Although GE is back on track, you'll need to keep a keen eye on the progress of this corporate action.

Change doesn't always work out so well
The thing is, income investors don't always make out so well when big changes are taking place. For example, UDR (NYSE: UDR  ) once bought fixer-uppers and upgraded them as a means to increase rents. That model worked well for the company for many years.

After a CEO change, however, the REIT set its sights on high barrier to entry markets. To help the transition to a new model, UDR sold off a large portion of its legacy portfolio. That sale was accompanied by a dividend cut. While UDR is a one of the largest apartment REITs and a well run company, income investors didn't make out so well on that change.

Leggett & Platt (NYSE: LEG  ) , best known for making bed springs, is another company making a strategic shift. Over the last few years, the company has been selling off smaller and less desirable operations to focus on growth businesses. That's led to what should be a temporary slowdown on the top and bottom lines and a relatively depressed stock price.

Throughout the shift, the around 4% yielder has maintained its decades long trend of dividend hikes, just at a slower pace. The question now is when will Leggett's business shift get the top and bottom lines moving again? That's what will be needed for dividend growth to shift back into high gear -- otherwise there could be a UDR style cut in the cards.

Change isn't easy
Simon's spin off is a shareholder-friendly move and one that should help remove the sting of its previous dividend cut. However, the company's mixed past shows that income investors need to keep a close eye on dividend payers undergoing big changes, like Leggett & Platt and GE today. Sometimes the result isn't as positive, a fact that REITs UDR and Simon (during the recession) have both proven.

Needless to say, anyone still in business for that amount of time has to be doing something right. In fact, why all banks don't follow in this institution's footsteps is beyond me. The Company�� Slate Group is a daily online magazine that offers fresh angles on stories in the news and entertainment coverage, all with its signature wit and irreverence, publishing provocative commentary on topics such as politics, culture, business and technology. Slate V is a daily online video magazine offering original video about politics, culture, and business, technology.

The Company divested its interest in Avenue100 Media Solutions Inc., a digital marketing company headquartered in Woburn, Massachusetts, in 2012. The Company sold its interest in the Bowater Mersey Paper Company Limited to the Province of Nova Scotia in 2012. In March 2013, the Company announced it has completed the sale of The Herald, a daily and Sunday newspaper and its other print and online products to Sound Publ! ishing, Inc.

Education

Kaplan, Inc., a subsidiary of the Company, provides a range of education and related services worldwide for students and professionals. Kaplan conducts its operations through three segments: Kaplan Higher Education, Kaplan Test Preparation and Kaplan International. Kaplan Higher Education (KHE) provides a wide array of certificate, diploma and degree programs on campus and online designed to meet the needs of students seeking to advance their education and career goals. During the year ended December 31, 2012, Kaplan�� United States-based KHE division businesses include Kaplan University and KHE Campuses.

Kaplan University specializes in online education, is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and holds other programmatic accreditations. Kaplan University�� programs are offered online, while some are offered in a traditional classroom format at 12 campuses in Iowa, Maine, Maryland and Nebraska, and four Kaplan University Learning Centers in four additional states. Kaplan University also includes Concord Law School, a fully online law school. During 2012, Kaplan University had approximately 38,800 students enrolled in online programs and approximately 5,600 students enrolled in its classroom-based programs.

Also residing within Kaplan University is the School of Professional and Continuing Education (PACE). PACE offers a range of education solutions to assist professionals in advancing their careers by obtaining professional licenses, designations and certifications. This includes solutions for insurance, securities, real estate, mortgage and appraisal licensing exams and for advanced designations, such as CFA and CPA exams. PACE serves more than 2,900 business-to-business clients, including more than 70 Fortune 500 companies. In 2012, approximately 510,000 students used PACE's exam preparation offerings. As of December 31, 2012, the KHE Campuses business consis! ts of 59 ! schools in 17 states, which provides classroom-based instruction to approximately 21,100 students.

Kaplan International operates businesses in Europe and the Asia Pacific region. In Europe, Kaplan operates in the businesses, which are all based in the United Kingdom and Ireland: Kaplan UK, Kaplan International Colleges (KIC) and a set of higher education institutions. The Kaplan United Kingdom business in Europe is a provider of training, test preparation services and degrees for accounting and financial services professionals, including those studying for ACCA, CIMA and ICAEW qualifications. In addition, Kaplan United Kingdom provides legal and professional training, including the operation of a United Kingdom law school in collaboration with Nottingham Trent University�� Nottingham Law School. In 2012, Kaplan United Kingdom provided courses to approximately 66,000 students, of whom 49,000 were dedicated to accounting and financial services coursework.

The KIC business consists of university pathways business and an English-language training business. The university pathways business offers academic preparation programs especially designed for international students who wish to study in English-speaking countries. KIC operates university pathways programs in collaboration with nine U.K. universities. As of December 31, 2012, KIC�� university pathways business was serving approximately 2,700 students. The English-language business (previously operated as Kaplan Aspect) provides English-language training, academic preparation programs and test preparation for English proficiency exams, principally for students wishing to study and travel in English-speaking countries. KIC operates a total of 41 English-language schools, with 19 located in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, and 22 located in the United States, where they operate under the name Kaplan International Centers. During 2012, the English-language business served approximately 65,000 stud! ents.

Kaplan also operates three higher education institutions in Europe, located in the United Kingdom and Ireland. These institutions are Dublin Business School, Holborn College and Kaplan Open Learning. As of December 31, 2012, these institutions enrolled an aggregate of approximately 6,500 students. In the Asia Pacific region, Kaplan operates businesses in Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong and China. In Singapore, Kaplan operates three business units, Higher Education, Financial and Professional, which serve more than 16,700 students from various countries throughout Asia.

Kaplan Singapore�� Higher Education business provides students with the opportunity to earn bachelor�� and postgraduate degrees in various fields on either a part-time or full-time basis. Kaplan Singapore�� students receive degrees from affiliated educational institutions in Australia, the U.K. and the U.S. In addition, this division offers pre-university and diploma programs. Kaplan Singapore�� Financial business provides preparatory courses for professional qualifications in accountancy and finance, such as the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).

In Australia, Kaplan delivers a broad range of financial services education and professional development courses. In 2012, this business provided courses to approximately 17,400 students through classroom programs and to more than 44,800 students through distance-learning programs. In 2012, Kaplan Australia underwent operational restructuring and offers its programs through three business units: English Language and Pathways; Vocational Education; and Higher Education.

The Vocational Education business of Kaplan Australia includes Kaplan Professional Education (KPE), Carrick Education Group and Franklyn Scholar. KPE offers financial services education programs and continuing professional development courses primarily to a business-to-business market, including banks and numerous! industry! sectors.. Approximately 43,000 students are taught through KPE each year. Carrick has traditionally offered English-language programs, vocational training and higher education courses in Australia. Kaplan is evaluating various strategic alternatives with respect to the Carrick business lines. As of December 31, 2012, Carrick was providing services to approximately 1,300 students. Franklyn Scholar offers a wide range of custom-developed programs to business clients. More than 16,000 students are taught through Franklyn Scholar each year.

The higher education business of Kaplan Australia comprises Kaplan Online Higher Education (KOHE) and Kaplan Business School (KBS), which offers diploma, bachelor�� and master�� degree programs. As of December 31, 2012, KBS has opened a new school in Brisbane and operates in four states in Australia teaching approximately 700 students each year. KOHE teaches approximately 1,800 students annually in postgraduate courses primarily in the financial services sector.

In Hong Kong, Kaplan offers a comprehensive array of programs, ranging from language education and standardized test preparation to corporate and financial training and higher education degree courses. During 2012, Kaplan�� Hong Kong business provided courses to more than 15,700 students.

In China, Kaplan provides foundation programs to Chinese students through partnerships with prestigious Chinese universities and high schools. Kaplan China offers foundation programs at 11 campuses and had more than 1,100 students enrolled at the end of 2012. Kaplan China also cooperates with several Chinese universities to provide ACCA training programs to the students. Cable ONE offers broadband Internet access service on virtually all of its cable systems and is the sole Internet service provider on those systems.

Kaplan International also includes the Kaplan Global Solutions business unit, which continues to develop partnerships with colleges, universities and non-p! rofit corp! orations and foundations. Kaplan Global Solutions, through its Colloquy business, enables its university partners to develop online educational programs by providing an array of research, marketing and design services. Through its Global Pathways programs, Kaplan Global Solutions enables its partner institutions in the Americas to enhance their brand globally and increase international student enrollments by designing and marketing custom programs aimed at student success.

Cable Television Operations

Through its subsidiary Cable One, Inc. (Cable ONE), the Company owns and operates cable television systems that provide video, Internet and voice service to subscribers in 19 midwestern, western and southern states. At the end of 2012, Cable ONE provided cable service to approximately 593,600 video subscribers, representing about 41% of the 1,439,740 homes passed by the systems, had approximately 459,200 subscriptions to high-speed data (HSD) service and 184,500 subscriptions to VoIP (digital voice) service. The video services offered by Cable ONE include certain premium, cable network and local over-the-air channels in high-definition television (HDTV) format. Cable ONE offers voice over Internet Protocol service, which permits users to make voice calls over broadband communications networks, including the Internet.

Other Activities

WaPo Labs is a digital team focusing on experimenting with emerging technologies. In 2012, WaPo Labs launched several projects in partnership with the Company�� media properties: Personal Post, a feature on washingtonpost.com that delivers personalized article recommendations based on a user�� interests and past reading behavior; The Fold, a video news program available on washingtonpost.com, Google TV and Android tablets, and The Root 100, which comprises 100 Android apps aggregating content about the Root 100 honorees, chosen for their impact and influence within the African-American community. In addition to working clo! sely with! the Company�� news websites, WaPo Labs oversees Washington Post Social Reader (Social Reader) and Trove. Social Reader is a Facebook-connected Website that delivers news articles based on a user�� interests and what their friends are reading. Social Reader aggregates content from the Post, Slate, Foreign Policy, Express, the Root and more than 90 other content partners to create a social stream of articles.

Social Code LLC (Social Code) is a marketing solutions company helping Fortune 500 brands maximize their marketing efforts on social media platforms. Celtic Healthcare, Inc. (Celtic) is a Medicare-certified provider of home health and hospice services headquartered in Mars, PA. Through its subsidiaries, Celtic is licensed to provide home health and hospice services throughout Pennsylvania and Maryland. These services include skilled nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, social work, nutrition, chaplain and aid services. In addition, Celtic provides virtual care services to patients throughout its service territories. Celtic derives 74% of its revenue from Medicare, with the remaining sources of revenue being Medicaid, commercial insurance and private payors.

Based on market conditions, it is also engaged in the processing of frozen strawberry products for sale to commercial and institutional users, such as preservers, dairies and drink manufacturers. The Molded Plastics segment is engaged in the production of plastic containers for the Company�� products and other molded plastics for sale to unaffiliated customers.

During the year ended December 31, 2011, in terms of candied fruit sales, approximately 20% were shipped to manufacturing bakers and other institutional users, with the balance being sold through supermarkets and other retail outlets for ultimate use in the home.
